Crop production, biotechnology, natural resources conservation and biofuels are just a few of the critical areas of agriculture where we have strong programs in teaching, research and extension. We develop lifelong learners who understand science, think analytically, find creative solutions, treat others with honesty and respect, and are prepared to lead, serve and provide decision makers with timely information regarding plant and soil systems. We conduct cutting-edge fundamental and applied disciplinary and multidisciplinary research with the active participation of undergraduate and graduate students, landowners, and decision makers.

What is Plant & Soil Sciences?

Our goal is to meet society’s need for food, feed, fiber and fuel through the conservation and management of plant and soil resources. Students work alongside faculty who contribute to biotechnology, crop production, environmental remediation, plant breeding and genetics, plant physiology, soil chemistry, soil nutrient management, soil physics, water quality and weed science.

Professor Using Breadth of Knowledge on Weed Science to Aid in Weed Management Progress in Oklahoma

March 27, 2024

Liberty Galvin is an assistant professor of extension weed science and precision weed management at Oklahoma State University. She studied abroad several times from 2011-2013 at Njala University in Sierra Leone. After completing her M.S. in International Agricultural Development, she worked for Brad Hanson in the weed science program from 2015-2016. She pursued her Ph.D. in weed science under professor Kassim Al-Khatib in 2022. Galvin works closely with Dr. Swati Shrestha, the OSU Plant and Soil Sciences Department weed geneticist, with one large research/extension goal for 2024.

NSF Rural Confluence Program to Pave the Way for Collaboration Between Researchers and Community Members

The NSF Rural Confluence Program is a $6 million, 4-year collaborative effort led by Oklahoma State University to advance rural climate resilience science and build resilience capacity in rural communities. The program will collaborate with two rural communities per state, in two-year cycles, and will be driven heavily by community-engaged research regarding climate impacts on community resilience and well-being.

Graduate Student Focuses on Plant Breeding and Genetics in Winter Wheat

March 26, 2024

Itunuoluwa Bola Adegbite, a graduate student from Nigeria, specializes in plant breeding and genetics. She chose Oklahoma State University for its strong wheat breeding program. Adegbite's research focuses on wheat quality, guided by Dr. Brett Carver. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. and is involved in various organizations, enjoying choir rehearsals and learning to play the keyboard in her spare time.
